CREATIVE_How Travelling Makes Me a More Dynamic Creative Leader

Travelling is awesome and I have been lucky to have so much of it in my life. I grew up travelling when I was tiny but then took a pretty long break from it as an adult when I was busy pursuing my rockstar dreams (in a very cool indie band might I add, wink wink). During that time, all my extra funds went there and while I have no regrets and a lifetime of indie music stories that I will cherish to the end of time, I did miss out on a few years of good travel because of it. Boy oh boy, have I been making up for lost time now and with good reason.

The rockstar days / old school:

In my day-to-day as Chief Creative Officer (CCO) of Digital 55, I have the honour of leading very talented creative and tech teams on complex design, digital, interactive and research-based projects focused on experience frameworking and design thinking. It’s pretty dope but I take that responsibility very seriously in terms of keeping inspired creatively and making sure my creative chops are so on point, the talented peeps I lead can’t help but be inspired to push boundaries and create awesome, mind-blowing stuff.

Colombia:

One of the things that keeps me creatively inspired is travel. Not only do you get out of your comfort zone and see other places in the world (visually stunning stuff which is obviously conducive to creativity) but it provides context on the nuances of life. Tiny interactions really stand out and being able to be part of someone’s day who you just met - so cool, such an amazing honour. A complete stranger can let you into their world, into their personal experience in just one glance, one small exchange. That connection is what I truly dig when travelling, and everywhere I go, I try to take a series of photos that I believe pays tribute to that time, that place, that setting. And my travel bestie can attest to the fact that I creative direct the %$#@ out of every travel photo because I just can’t help myself.

South Africa / Belgium / Netherlands / Ethiopia:

There are many ways to stay creative which don’t always have to include glamorous jet-setting trips around the world but when the opportunity crops up and you need some inspiration, go! See the world. Meet people. Get out of your comfort zone and let your mind wander for a bit.

Wanderlust for life!
